Working for a Sustainable Ocean
February 26, 2013
Atkinson Center Associate Director Drew Harvell (EEB) highlights several ocean sustainability projects currently ongoing in the Harvell lab, which focuses on the health of marine invertebrates in today's oceans, with projects on coral reef health ongoing in Hawaii, Indonesia, and Puerto Rico. Coral reefs are one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, caught in a squeeze by destructive forces of climate warming and local pollution and over-fishing. Prof. Harvell is exploring positive solutions such as development of marine protected areas, best practices in coastal pollution management, and providing training both internationally and in the US. A long term focus of her group is how coral resistance to disease is affected by environmental factors, such as climate warming and coastal pollution.
