Marine ecologist Drew Harvell helped shape legislation currently in the House that would provide immediate funding to mount a rapid response when marine infectious diseases are first detected. The new bill is receiving widespread press attention.

Harvell coauthored a recent letter in Science that describes the Marine Disease Emergency Act, sponsored by Representative Dennis Heck (D-Wash.).

At present, there is no federal mechanism in place for responding to marine epidemics like the massive die-off of sea stars along the Pacific coast. “This is a start,” Harvell told MSN, “and you’ve got to start somewhere.”
