Lab of O's YardMap

YardMap, a social network hosted by Cornell’s Laboratory of Ornithology, collects data on bird habitats by asking individuals across the country to draw maps of their backyards, parks, farms, favorite birding locations, schools, and gardens. Thousands of “citizen scientists” across the country contribute to the effort every year. The YardMap website also provides tools to help users make better decisions about how to manage their landscapes sustainably.

Faculty Fellow Janis Dickinson (NTRES) is faculty director of citizen science at the Lab of O and YardMap’s PI. The Atkinson Center contributed to YardMap’s growing success by awarding Dickinson and her team a 2012 Rapid Response Fund (RRF) grant to examine how social media factors like electronic peer-policing can encourage sustainable practices.
