U.S. farmers are falling behind, Cornell and 12 other leading American universities warn. A June report, “Retaking the Field,” makes a solid case for boosting federal funding of agricultural and food sciences research.

The report features research by food scientist David Just, an ACSF faculty fellow, that reveals effective marketing strategies school cafeteria lines can use to help kids make healthier eating choices. Read more about “Retaking the Field” in the Cornell Chronicle.

Sustainable agriculture and food systems is one of the Atkinson Center’s six focus areas—top sustainability priorities that build on Cornell’s strength and expertise. We award more than $1.5 million in seed research funding each year. As projects mature and start to make a game-changing impact, they often attract federal funding, including grants from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other agencies.

We recently announced 14 new Academic Venture Fund awards—including six innovative projects that will advance sustainable agriculture, ensure reliable and just food systems, and safeguard the world’s food security. Here’s a sample of the work our funded faculty teams are carrying out across campus:
