Hyundai rolled out the first 15 of its new hydrogen-powered sport utility vehicles this month--straight to Copenhagen, since Europe has the necessary fueling station infrastructure. The United States is running far behind, with fewer than two dozen hydrogen fueling stations open to regular motorists. Close to half of them are clustered in California.

ACSF Faculty Fellow Paul Mutolo (EMC2) founded a start-up, the Standard Hydrogen Corporation, to bring new hydrogen fueling stations to the Northeast. He was quoted in a recent article pointing to the slow growth of hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the U.S.:

Mutolo would love to see projects in the U.S. similar to what Hyundai is doing in Copenhagen. “What’s needed are more demonstration sites," Mutolo said, "where Americans can actually touch and feel the technology. That would also help us poll the market demand.”
