Americans are finding less to admire these days about the well-to-do. The rich currently rate the lowest of all economic classes, according to CNN’s business website. Their favorability rating has dropped nine points over the past decade.

But we still admire self-made millionaires—entrepreneurs who use their own smarts and hard work to get rich. CNN asked sociologist Kim Weeden, director of Cornell’s Center for the Study of Inequality, why we do. “Americans are fascinated by the rags-to-riches idea,” she said. “There’s this perception that anyone can do it, and if you can’t, you’re lazy or damaged.”
