Sustainable communities utilize cost-effective energy sources releasing minimal carbon, construct efficient buildings and transportation systems, provide equitable and affordable housing, promote climate resilience, and maintain clean water and sanitation systems. Sustainable communities also offer environmentally and economically sound food systems, recreational opportunities, and opportunities for civic engagement. The concept of community is central to sustainability. More than 20 Atkinson-funded projects in this area indicate the strong commitment and depth of talent at Cornell already engaged.
