Visionary Benefactors and Catalysts for Change
David R. Atkinson ’60, a successful investor and philanthropist, made a lasting contribution to sustainability when he provided the seed money to create Cornell University’s Center for a Sustainable Future in 2007. David’s vision, then as now, was to marshal the vast resources of Cornell and leverage important partnerships with outside groups to deliver interdisciplinary solutions for the most complex problems we face as a global community.
“Cornell is the best-positioned university in America, and arguably the world, to develop interdisciplinary sustainability solutions.”
David R. Atkinson ‘60
In 2010, David and his wife Patricia made a historic gift that established what is now the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability. Nearly a decade later, David is still an instrumental guiding force in our mission to improve food security, reduce climate risk, accelerate energy transitions, and advance One Health. As a member of the Cornell Atkinson Advisory Board, he continues to position Cornell Atkinson as an unbiased source of scientific information for global audiences; a catalyst for collaborative research; and a partner with entrepreneurs, businesses, nongovernmental organizations, and governments to move society toward a more sustainable future.
