To create a world in which people can meet their needs and pursue their dreams without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.
The Atkinson Center is working toward a future where the world's needs for reliable energy, a resilient environment, and responsible economic development can flourish, not as competing demands, but as complementary spokes on the wheel of prosperity.
We are the first research institution to unite three pillars of sustainability—energy, environment, and economic development—in one center. Our grant programs and activities spark unusual collaborations from all corners of campus so that today’s seeds of knowledge can grow into tomorrow's solutions. But good research is not enough on its own. Our priority is to engage with external nonacademic partners to bring discoveries to bear and maximize real-world impact.
The Atkinson Center was founded by a generous gift from David and Pat Atkinson, whose commitment to sustainability and to Cornell is evident in their continued support and thoughtful leadership.
We have general and targeted grant and fellowship programs to spur a wide range of sustainability activities.
The Atkinson Center connects with external partners – from corporations to nonprofits – that have on-the-ground capacity to identify, test, and implement research-proven strategies that work.
We support summer internships at leading environmental organizations for students who want to solve sustainability problems, shape policy, and gain real-world work experience.
We facilitate engagement with policymakers and news organizations and provide broad communication training and support for researchers who want to reach beyond the university.
