DNA in Water Used to Uncover Genes of Invasive Fish
In a new study, Cornell Atkinson Director David Lodge, Fellows Suresh Sethi (CALS) and Jose Andres (CALS), with Cornell Atkinson Research Fellow Kara Andres leading the way, analyzed environmental DNA from water samples in Cayuga Lake to gather about the presence of invasive round gopy fish.
Why Collaboration is the Missing Ingredient in Food System Reform
Fellows Rebecca Nelson (CALS) and Chris Barrett (Dyson), co-authors of a Cornell-led expert panel released by Nature Sustainability and funded by Cornell Atkinson, spoke with GreenBiz on how collaboration results in trusted systems that underpin structural change.
Warming Oceans May Be Choking Off Oxygen to Starfish, Causing Them to "Drown"
"Sea stars diffuse oxygen over their outer surface through little structures called papulae, or skin gills. If there is not enough oxygen surrounding the papulae, the starfish can't breathe," says Fellow Ian Hewson (CALS). His research was an outgrowth of a 2014 Cornell Atkinson Rapid Response Fund award.
Organic Matter, Bacteria Doom Sea Stars to Oxygen Depletion
New research led by Fellow Ian Hewson (CALS) suggests that starfish, victims of sea star wasting disease, may actually be in respiratory distress, as nearby organic matter and warming oceans rob them of their "breath."
Geoffrey Coates developed a "special sauce" to make recycling plastics easier and cheaper, featured in Forbes.
